1 May 2021, Kuta Beach, Bali – Indonesia: Over 100 groms showed up to beautiful Kuta Beach this morning to enjoy the perfect waves that the Indian Ocean was delivering for the first Grom Patrol competition of 2021, which included a beach cleanup and an opening speech by Mrs Betsy Dian Astri, representing the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and the Creative Economy who made this event possible with their support.
The competition opened with the groms being offered a choice of left or right hand waves in the low tide conditions, with consistent 3 foot waves and the occasional bigger closeout set rolling through for the 16 and Under Boys Division. By mid-day the tide had filled in, creating conditions that suited the younger boys superbly, and then as the tide receded the girls had their time to shine.
Tomorrow will see all the competitors in all divisions surfing again in Round 2, as this new Grom Patrol format has (up to) 6 person heats but there are no losers after Round 1. All the groms get to surf both rounds, and then the 5 groms with the top scores from both rounds will compete in the finals for the amazing prize packs contributed by the event supporters/sponsors.
