16 September 2022, Bali-Indonesia: Nearly 100 groms have signed up to compete in Tipi Jabrik’s Grom Patrol Surf Competition supported by Vans Indonesia and Mamaka by Ovolo tomorrow, which is scheduled to start off at 7:00 am at Halfways on Kuta Beach with a great swell and weather forecast on offer, all promising to provide excellent conditions and lots of fun for everyone during the weekend.
Tomorrow’s competition will see a new competition format run for Day 1, which is meant to allow for inconsistencies in the number and quality of waves during the day and allow the best performing competitors to advance into finals day.
“Sometimes with 15 or 20 minute heats and 4 competitors, when conditions make it very difficult to catch many waves, the best surfers don’t make it through the heat,” said Grom Patrol creator Tipi Jabrik. “So even though they got the highest single wave score, they didn’t get another good wave while another surfer got two medium scores and made it through…so we want to implement this new format on Day 1 to help the most skillful surfers advance and reduce the element of luck so that the best surfers all get into the final day,” he explained.
The New Format:
After each surfer completes their heat, they will be given points for how they finished in their heat added to their highest wave score as below:
1st place = 8 pts
2nd place = 6 pts
3rd place = 4 pts
4th place = 2 pts
For example, a surfer has a highest wave score of 6.0, but finished in 3rd place, their total score is 10. This total score will determine their position on the Leaderboard, which will ultimately determine if they make the cut into Day 2.
The cut-off for the Boys is the Top 12 scores, and the cut-off for the Girls is Top 6 scores, so those topping the Leaderboard on Day 1 are into Day 2 with a shot at the winners podium at the end of the day!
Another exciting new addition to this year’s event is that the Grom Patrol Surf Competition will be broadcast live by Asian Sports Broadcasting, so friends and family and surfing fans around the world can tune in and watch the action from wherever they are on the ASC’s YouTube Channel at https://www.youtube.com/c/AsianSurfCo
