The ASC in cooperation with Bali Elite Surf Coaching and Meerkat Global are excited to announce the launch of Tipi Jabrik’s Grom Patrol Surf Training and Comp this July in Bali, for three weekends of  instructive and fun-filled surf training together with three grom competitions for Under 18-year-old boy and girl surfers of all abilities.

Each three – day program will offer up 15 spots to young surfers, who will receive surf coaching and instruction by Bali Elite Surf Coaching, social media education by Meerkat Global, and compete in a surf competition with computerized scoring by Live Heats, ISA certified judges, and a 4-person priority system, while staying at Kosta Hostel in Seminyak inclusive of meals and transportation.

Grom Patrol #1 is scheduled for 5-7 July, Grom Patrol #2 for 12-14 July, and Grom Patrol #3 on 19-21 July, and the single event package rate per surfer is Rp 2,000,000 (approximately $150 USD), with a discounted rate of Rp 3,750,000 ( $265 USD) for two events and Rp 5,500,000 ($390 USD) for all three events.

The surf competition series is open to everyone on a first come-first served basis, with an entry fee of Rp 200,000 per event, (approx. $15 USD) and a limit per division as follows:

Under 18 = 16 boys/16 girls = 32
Under 16 = 16 boys/16 girls = 32
Under 14 = 12 boys/12 girls = 24
Under 12 = 12 boys/12 girls = 24

Prizes from sponsors will be awarded and there will be a series champion crowned at the end of the three-event competition

The program is structured to take the young surfers at their present skill and knowledge level and provide them with focused physical and mental surf training together with tools to assist them in increasing their surfing profiles on social media, and then give them a chance to measure their improvement over a series of competitions.

The weekend will start with the students gathering at Kosta on Friday morning at 8 am for an introduction and briefing, then it’s off to Legian Beach for training until approximately 5 pm, when they will be transported back to Kosta for a review session and dinner at 7 pm.  Saturday and Sunday mornings, bright and early at 6 am, the students will be taken back to the beach for the first day and seconds days of competition, which will start at 7am and run until 5 pm.

ASC Director and Grom Patrol creator Tipi Jabrik is excited to be offering this program to young, up and coming groms, saying “The kids are the future of surfing and we want to give them every chance to follow their dreams of either just enjoying surfing as a sport with friends or focusing on becoming professional surfers.  Every surfer kid here in Bali looks up to guys like Dede Suryana, Garut Widiarta, Raditya Rondi, Rizal Tanjung, and those older surfers, and even younger guys like Rio Waida and Ketus Agus…. those guys all benefitted from having years of great grom events. But nowadays there are no grom events anymore, and this the reason why I needed to put this Grom Patrol program together.  With the growth of surfing as a sport around Asia and with surfing now in the Olympics, it’s more important than ever to offer more opportunities to our kids, not less.  So with these training camps and a solid competition training , we can help assure the future of our surfers.”

During the peak times of the surfing industry here in Bali, there were multiple surf branded grom events such as Quiksilver King of the Groms, Rusty Grom Fest, Rip Curl GromSearch, Billabong Grommet Attack, Volcom Totally Crustaceous Tour, Oakley and others.  But with the tightening up of resources in the surfing retail industry over the last few years, there have been fewer and fewer grom comps happening in Bali not to mention Indonesia as a whole, which is disappointing in light of the fact that the popularity of surfing has been growing steadily in Indonesia and the Asian Region.

This situation is what has motivated Tipi Jabrik and the supporters of Indonesian surfing to join together to create and support the Grom Patrol as a long-term program that can be taken to other parts of Indonesia and also to other areas in the Asian Region to provide valuable training, coaching and motivation for today’s up and coming surfing youth.
