15 May 2026, Tanneribhavi Beach, Mangalore: The first of two Grom Patrol stops in India kicks off tomorrow at Tanneribhavi Beach, Mangalore, where over 50 of India’s growing community of groms will take to the water to compete and have fun in this structured and educational competition event presented by Arun Vasu and organized by the Surfing Federation of India in cooperation with the Mangalore Surf Club.
The morning started with a beach cleanup, then a practice session, followed by a competitors briefing at the River View Resort where Mangalore Surf Club President “Paddy” Padmanabha warmly welcomed the participants and families to this second annual Grom Patrol event.
Then Contest Director Nawaz Jabbar explained the contest schedule and formats to the groms, along with announcing that all competitors needed to be on the beach by 6:30 am tomorrow and be prepared for a 7:00 am start. He then introduced Samai Reboul, who is the Head Judge for the event, and Samai explained the judging criteria and made sure the participants understood how they would be judged during the competition.
After the contestants had completed their registration and received their event t-shirts, Contest Directory Nawaz Jabbar was asked about the present conditions and what he anticipated over the next two days. “I was at the beach for a few hours earlier today and the sun was bright, the waves were pumping, the kids were ripping, so everything is set up for a great two days of Grom Patrol competition,” he replied. “It’s quite a contrast to last year, where the night before we were all in damage control mode and stressed out, trying to organize multiple backup plans to see how we could proceed with the comp. So it’s a relief that our forecast and the condition look so different this time. But I’ll have to say, I’m glad we went through it, as the team now has the experience and ability to handle whatever comes our way. Now everyone and everything is ready, all systems are in place, so we’re ready for a super fun event this weekend.”

This is the first of two Grom Patrol events India will host in 2026, with the second scheduled to take place in from 16-18 July at Kovalam Beach near Chennai—both made possible through the dedicated support of India’s leading surfing advocate and ISA President, Arun Vasu.
Vasu strongly believes the future of Indian surfing lies with its youth. His vision led to the collaboration with Tipi Jabrik’s Grom Patrol program, aimed at nurturing talent from the grassroots.
The 2026 Grom Patrol season will culminate with a Grand Final at Kuta Beach, Bali from 21-23 August, where the top performers from all international stops will join Indonesia’s best groms for an exciting season finale. Event winners and overall Grom Patrol 2026 Champions in each division will be crowned.
