12 February 2024, San Juan, La Union, Philippines: Nique Miller (HAW) won the Women’s Invitational and Roger Casugay (PHP) the Men’s Invitational at the 10th Single & Unattached Classic Single Fin Invitational competition at Mona Lisa Point in La Union today in beautiful 2-3 foot surf, providing the spectators on the beach and the international live audience hours of amazing performances and highlights from an impressive field of local and international competitors on Day 4 of the event.

After running through the Men’s and Women’s Quarterfinals and Semifinals to narrow down the field to the final 4 in each division, the Men’s finalists paddled out first to decide who would take the 2024 crown.

There was no doubt it would be a tightly contested final, with three locals who know the waves of Mona Lisa Point as well as they know the inside of their own homes and one Australian, albeit one very knowledgeable  Matt “Waxhead” Chojnacki.    But it was Roger Casugay who would post the final’s only excellent score and come back to the beach the winner of the 10th Single & Unattached Invitational, challenged by up and comer Jomarie Ebueza but holding him off til the end.  This is the 10th time Roger has competed in the event, and was very stoked to be this year’s winner.

“Out there is was so fun, I didn’t even believe it that I would win,” said Casugay.  “ I just got that board from Dondoy a day before the comp started, so I didn’t really get a chance to get the feeling of it, but it worked really good.  I’m super thankful for the people that are supporting me.  This Single & Unattached event is the funnest event I’ve ever joined..it’s so great to have an international single fin logging event here at home, where you can show your ability, and maybe even be the winner.  Surfing single fin heavy log boards with these international surfers, all here at home in La Union, it is amazing!”

When asked for what he thought was the key to Casugay’s success today, Commentator Sam Bleakley replied, “He had a lot of energy today, so I think it was his energy and his passion that got him through and got him the win.  The good waves that he had grew through the inside of the reef and allowed scoring right through to the channel.  His variety and his drive, he was always accelerating when coming out of his maneuvers like noserides, Hang Tens and soul arches, but also his great rail work and carving turns, they were very expressive and had the wow factor.”

In the Women’s Final it was a truly international affair with competitors from American Samoa, Hawaii, Japan, and the Philippines.  The lead only changed once during the 20 minute final, with Sivelia Jarrard (AS) leading the entire final up until just over a minute remained, when Nique Miller (HAW), who was holding onto second place, found a nice runner that provided a couple of nice steeper sections that she worked all the way onto the reef, smashing her finbox in the process, to gain the lead and win the final.

After being carried up the beach by Jay-R Esquivel and Benito Nerida, Miller was over the moon, saying “The third time is charm!  I finally get to hold the Single and Unattached title after three tries!”

When asked to describe her final experience, she replied “I just wanted to surf more free in this final, get a few more hang 10’s and overall have good transitions.  Especially for my last wave, as I knew I wouldn’t have much time to paddle back out.  I had to go for everything because I was behind, needing a 5 something, so I knew would need every little point I could get, so I just sent it.  Then on the inside I broke my finbox, so my board was unrideable, and I could do was wait for the score to be announced.   So happy to finally get this win!”

Sam Bleakely was very impressed with her performance, saying “She was just so clean and precise all event, walking in and out of her nose rides, which is not so easy as a goofyfooter on a right point break, so it was really nice to see her walking so cleanly in and out of nose rides.  Shewas able to score well on the inside sections, getting set waves that grew on the inside, like on her last wave, where she had the extra opportunity for a Hang 10 and to do some down carves”

Head Judge Mike Oida was asked to comment on the results. “As a head judge at this event, the biggest challenge for me and the judges was that although this is a fun logging event where everyone is happy and easygoing, we still had to gives scores and someone would win and others would lose.  We had our judging criteria as our guide and the competitors knew what they needed to do, so we just focused on that.  But it wasn’t easy, as the level of the top surfers here has gotten so high, especially when it got to the quarterfinals, it required lots of concentration.  But I feel like we got it right today, big congratulations to Nique and Roger!
