Last year’s event was titled the Nias Utara International Surfing Competition and took place from 21-24 August, with Bali’s Made Pajar Ariyana (IDN) winning the Men’s Open Division and and Willow Hardy (AUS) from West Australia taking the win in the Women’s Open Division.

The final day saw 3-4 foot glassy walls running down the reef, offering a vision of perfection as the competitors were mixing it up with big turns, cutbacks and hacks along with the occasional barrel and air thrown in.

Nearly 50 competitors competed in this first ever international surfing competition in North Nias, with Indonesians from Afulu, Sorake, and Gunung Sitoli and also from West Sumatra, Mentawai, and Bali, along with international competitors from Australia, Basque Country, Brazil, Canada, Canary Islands, Italy, Japan, Switzerland, and the USA.

With this year’s Nias Pro finishing up on the 15th of June, it’s expected that the Afulu Pro will draw even more international participants this year.
