4 August 2023, Kuta – Bali, Indonesia: The Asian Surf Cooperative (ASC) is delighted to announce the launch of Amman Mineral’s Blue Program with an ISA Surf Instructor Level 1 course to be held at the Tropical Beach Resort in Sekongkang, West Sumbawa from 6-10 August.
The International Surfing Association Surf Instructor Level 1 course will begin with two days of classroom instruction followed by three days of surf lesson teaching to fulfill the required 20 hours of practical experience under the supervision of an ISA certified surf instructor. Surf lessons will be offered free of charge to the local community with the aim of both providing students for the instructors and to offer an opportunity for more local people to be exposed to the sport of surfing.
ISA certification is recognized worldwide as the international standard of safety, quality, and efficacy for surf coaches and instructors within the surf industry, therefore when Amman Mineral created their Blue Program with the aim of developing surfing and creating economic opportunities through surfing on the KSB area, a requirement was that the program start with ISA training.
The ASC has been organizing and running surfing educational programs including ISA Surf Instructor and Judging programs since 2008 under the authority of Indonesia’s surfing federation the PSOI (Persatuan Selancar Ombad Indonesia), so has been given the responsibility by Amman to execute the Blue Program in cooperation with Blue Program Directors Christian Troy and Rizal Tandjung.
And what exactly is the Blue Program? “The Blue Program is meant to be an economic development opportunity that is rooted in the locals and taking advantage of the natural assets that already exist here on the island,” said Troy. “And for those who are already participating in the sea-going lifestyle, we want to make them examples, to lead others to do the same, both for the local people in West Sumbawa and as offerings to visitors.”
Rizal Tandjung added, “This program is about growing surfing in West Sumbawa and changing the future of the people so they can have a better living through surfing. To be an ISA certified instructor will give them a higher profile as a surf teacher and give them a better understanding about how to be a proper surf instructor. We want to work together with the schools in West Sumbawa to teach them about ocean safety, swimming and surfing, and give them an opportunity to enjoy the ocean and how to take care of their environment. At the end of the course, we’re handing over 20 softops to the West Sumbawa Boardriders and the POSI so they can start this program to train the kids and make them good surfers.”
This will be the initial “Phase 1” of the Blue Program, which begins by training members of the West Sumbawa Surf Club how to teach surfing properly. Future programs will include judging and officiating as well as business, media, and organizational educational workshops and more.
