17 May 2019, Kuta-Bali, Indonesia: The PSOI (Persatuan Selancar Ombak Indonesia) in cooperation with the International Surfing Association (ISA) and the ASC are excited to offer the ISA International Judging and Officiating Course from 17-18 June to both aspiring and currently certified judges here on the beautiful island of Bali.

The ISA International Judging and Officiating course will include 2 days of classroom learning (17-18 June) and the opportunity for practical judging experience during the RAST international surfing competition being held at Padma Beach from 19-22 June.

The course presenter will be Keenan Roxburgh, who in addition to being at WSL (World Surf League) Head Judge, is also the Head Judge for the RAST event series. “I’m always excited to come back to Bali,” said Roxburgh. “But especially this year as not only will I be coming as the Head Judge of the RAST event for the 3rd year running, this time I’ll have the opportunity to present an ISA judging course before the event and this allows the participants to do some shadow judging and actual judging during the event as well. There is no substitute for some real-time experience to give the attendees a practical lesson on what judging is all about,” he explained.

The ISA International Judging and Officiating Course is designed to accommodate both aspiring and currently accredited judges. First time attendees will receive Level 1 ISA Trainee Judge status with several hours of practical judging experience upon successful completion of the course, Trainee Judges can get their Level 2 accreditation, and Level 2 judges their Level 3 certification as follows:

STEP 1: Level 1 ISA Trainee Judge

  1. Be a member of your state/national governing body
  2. Attend the class, complete the workbook, and pass the examination

STEP 2: Level 2 ISA National Judge

  1. Be a member of your state/national governing body
  2. Attend the class, complete the workbook, and pass the examination
  3. Provide diary sheet detailing 20 hours of practical judging experience. Minimum 10 hours at a regional/state level and a maximum 10 hours at a club level
  4. The Head Judge must sign off on these hours on the provided diary sheet*

*You will then be registered as a National level 2 official with ISA and the National Governing Body. This will enable you to officiate at regional and national sanctioned surfing events in a paid capacity.

STEP 3: Level 3 International Judge

  1. Be a member of your state/national governing body
  2. Attend the class, complete the workbook, and pass the examination
  3. Provide diary sheet detailing 100 hours of practical judging experience. Minimum 50 hours judging under a qualified ISA Head judge and a maximum 50 hours judging at a club level
  4. The Head Judge must sign off on these hours on the provided diary sheet*

*You will be registered as an International level 3 official with National Governing Body, the ISA and the WSL. This will enable you to officiate at regional, state, National and International surfing events in a paid capacity and be eligible for the international exchange program

The Bali ISA International Judging and Officiating Course will be held at the Boardriders (previously Quiksilver) Headquarters in Kuta, which is located at Jalan Legian No.362.

PSOI President Arya Subyakto has many years of experience as a surfer, judge, and as a pioneer in Indonesian surfing, and is pleased to be able to offer this course especially to Indonesian judge candidates. “We’ve been working hard at forming regional PSOI chapters around Indonesia especially during the last year , and this provides the regions an opportunity to send their best candidates to Bali to take this course. It’s important for the growing surf communities around Indonesia to learn proper judging and therefore ensure that the surfers progress their skills in the best way,” said Subyakto.

Course fees as follows:

First time attendees: $150 USD for internationals/IDR 1,500,000 for Indonesian nationals.

Previously ISA certified attendees: $75 USD for internationals/IDR 750,000 for Indonesian nationals.

Lunch will be provided each day, and the classroom generously donated by Boardriders.

Classroom hours approximately 9:00 am – 4:00 pm each day.
