13 December 2021, Bali-Indonesia: The 2021 Tipi Jabrik’s Grom Patrol Camp and Comp presented by Quiksilver and Roxy wrapped up last night at the rooftop of the Mamaka Resort with a boisterous crowd of groms and their parents, friends and media celebrating together after a long day of competition at Kuta Beach, with a delicious BBQ, a video highlights reel, a lucky draw, and finally the awards presentation for the top finalists who took home heaps of great goodies from Grom Patrol sponsors and supporters.
Indonesia has arguably the most potential of any country in the world for producing world class surfers, given its huge population and literally thousands of spectacular surf spots, and Bali is indeed it’s epicenter. Proof of that potential was on full display yesterday, as some 60 plus boys and girls gathered on Kuta Beach to show off their best surfing in what was certainly testing wave and weather conditions, which included onshore winds, choppy and closing out waves, threatening storm clouds, and even some thunder and lightning. But thankfully the rain and bad weather stayed away and allowed a fun and safe event to go down.
Action got under way at 7 am with the Under 16 Boys division, and concluded at 5:30 pm with the Under 16 Boys Final.
In a day full of impressive performances, topping the list was an 11 year old Balinese grom, Putu Aditya Putra Somiya, who competed in both the Under 12 and Under 14 divisions…and won them both!

Jasper Glossop
Next on the list was 9 year old Jasper Glossop, who surfed a total of 7 heats in two divisions (Under 10 and Under 12) on his way to winning the Under 10 and getting second place in the Under 12 division. Jasper even bested his older brother Oscar in the Under 12’s final! Both boys are the proud products of an Indonesia mother and an Australian father.
Legian Boardriders top grom, 9 year old Gede Darma Wisesa, gave his boardriders club something to be proud of, coming in second place in the Under 10 division, and nabbing a 4th place in the Under 12 division
In the Under 12 division, Jasmine Studer convincingly won her final with a total (two best waves) score of 8.5, with the runner up posting a total of only 4.83. Jasmine also competed in the Under 16 division, where she nabbed a 4th place finish to end up on two podiums at the awarding. Jasmine’s father is surfboard shaper Luke Studer, who also donated a Stoody surfboard in the Lucky draw which was won by Alik Rudiarta of Uluwatu’s son Alvin.

Ziggy Mackenzie
Also delivering an impressive performance was 13 year old Ziggy MacKenzie in the Under 16 Division, who showed great wave selection and mature surfing to grab the top spot of the podium last night. Ziggy’s the product of parents who own Drifter, one of the sponsors/supporters of the Grom Patrol, so has been living and surfing in Bali for most of her life.
In the Under 16 Boys division final, Westen Hirst posted the highest single wave score to jump into the lead but soon found himself overtaken by Gana and Made Noe as he struggled to find a backup score. Then just before the buzzer, he got the score he needed to win the final with a score of 8.80 to Gana’s 8.50. Westen is mixed Indonesian and Australian, with a father that runs a surfboard shaping factory, so surfing is truly in his blood.
The final Grom Patrol Camp and Comp of 2021 saw 22 groms participating in the camp that was based at the Mamaka Hotel, with surf training from Friday afternoon through Saturday evening, then concluding with the surf competition on Sunday that was joined by just under 70 kids.
It was a great way to end a challenging year, and everyone was super excited to be together at the beach and then on the rooftop at Mamaka, celebrating having fun outdoors and participating in their favorite beach activity. We’re all looking forward to doing it again next year!
