The Persatuan Selancar Ombak Indonesia (Indonesian Surfing Federation) is proud to announce that the Indonesian National Surfing Championships (Kejuaraan National Selancar Ombak) will be held in Bali at Pererenan Beach from 4-5 October, with surfers from all over the archipelago from Aceh to Papua coming together to meet and compete in Men’s and Women’s Shortboard and Longboards divisions.
There are 17 provinces across Indonesia that can send up to 8 surfers (two for each division) to Bali for this competition, which means there could be up to 139 surfers in attendance for the two day event.
This National Championship event has been organized in order to satisfy requirements set by KONI (National Sports Committee of Indonesia) so that next year there can be a qualification event for PON 2024 (National Sports Week 2024), which will be held in Aceh and will be the first time that the sport of surfing will be included in a multi-sport national event in Indonesia.
“This event provides the opportunity for the provinces to send their best surfers to compete against each other and to measure their level of performance,” said PSOI President Arya Subyakto. “This will allow them to better prepare for next year’s PON qualifying event, as they will have a more realistic idea of where they are, and how far they need to go as compared to other surfers from other regions. I’m really looking forward to seeing all the diverse talent that will be gathered here in Bali and how they will perform against each other,” he added.
The PSOI staged a surfing exhibition in Papua in September of 2021, which was well received by the PON organizing committee and subsequently surfing was approved for inclusion in PON 2024.
PON (Pekan Olahraga National Sports Week) is for Indonesia like the South East Asian Games is for Asia, a multi-sport event that is held every four years. The participants of this event are athletes from all provinces of Indonesia, and it is organized by the National Sports Committee of Indonesia.
With surfing now an Olympic sport, and Indonesia having its top surfer Rio Waida participate as a competitor and a flag bearer in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, surfing has gained both popularity and support from the national government, who is now recognizing that Indonesia has many talented surfers who can become Olympic medalists and world champions if given training, funds, and opportunity.
