24 August, 2019 – Covelong Point, India: Excellent wave conditions on Day One of the REnextop Asian Surfing Tour (RAST) event allowed a full day of surfing with Men’s Quarterfinalists in both Shortboard and Longboard as well as Women’s Shortboard and Longboard Finalists selected at India’s Covelong Point today as part of the Covelong Point Surf, Yoga, & Music Festival.
Tomorrow will see the conclusion of the competition, which will cap off a four day run of great waves, good vibes, music and yoga in the small fishing village of Covelong on India south east coast just about an hour’s drive from the city of Chennai.
Local surfer Manikandi “Appu” fought his way into the Men’s Shortboard Quarterfinals where he will take on Mega Artana from Bali, Indonesa tomorrow in a man-on-man dual tomorrow. “The waves have been so good the last few days here for our National event and now the RAST event, so I’ve been able to put together some good heats and progress,” said Appu. “The last couple of months the waves have been really small, but coming into this event we’ve suddenly had great waves. I’m about 80 kgs now, so I need some bigger waves, and oday was perfect for me,” he added smiling.
Surfers from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Reunion Island, the Philippines, have come to this quaint fishing village to join in the 7th annual Covelong Point event, which has grown exponentially over the years to be the most popular surfing event of the year in India.
Tomorrow will see the conclusion of the RAST #2 event and an amazing lineup of bands and fun to round out another incredible Covelong Point Surf, Yoga and Music Festival.
