It’s the ramp up to the end of the 2019 Grom Patrol Surf Training Camp as the 14 groms that signed up for the final camp continued their training today at Halfways, Kuta Beach, furthering their education and improving their skills towards testing themselves this coming Sunday at the grand finals of the Grom Patrol Surf Competition.
Today’s activities were focused on things like pre-heat warmups, stretching and breathing, and also venue analysis; watching where the waves were breaking best, monitoring changes in the tides, and most importantly watching the heat previous to theirs as the wave conditions are always changing.
Free surfing, lunch, body surfing, and then an after-lunch session focused on analyzing how to properly put combinations of maneuvers together using Dylan’s video application.
“On the previous camps we would focus on and analyze how the kids did on single maneuvers, but now we are working on how they should link maneuvers together and on combinations of manuevers,” said Dylan. “This application I have gives me the ability to show the kids both what they are doing and what they should be doing, so it’s quick and visual and helps a lot.”
Serena Boccato from Brazil has already posted one event win in Grom Patrol #1, and a second place in Grom Patrol #2 in the Under 14 Girls division, and was asked what was the most important thing she has learned so far. “The most important thing I have learned so far is that to get a good snap, you have to really swing your arm around and also lift your arm on the bottom turn, and move your head around…using your whole body on the turn. You need the full rotation to make a powerful turn,” she replied.
Tomorrow will see more focused training at Kuta Beach in preparation for the final competition on Sunday. Look for these groms to put on a great display of surfing as they vie for the top spot on the podium!
