21 June 2019, Bali – Indonesia: It was a full day of non-stop longboard action today at Padma Beach on Day 3 of the REnextop Asian Surfing tour, with both the Men’s and Women’s Longboard Divisions running through the Quarterfinals in mostly excellent 3-5 foot wave conditions to set up the final day of competition tomorrow.

The action got started at 8:15am in beautiful glassy 3-4 foot waves for the 32 international men competitors from countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and the USA.

Japan’s Masaya Tsukamoto put up the highest single wave score of 7.50 (out of a possible 10) as well as the highest combined heat score of 14.33 (out of a possible 20) in his Round 2 heat to advance to the Quarterfinals, where he bested Filipino Benito Nerida to earn his spot in the Semifinals and will take on another Filipino, Jay-R Esquival in Semifinal 1 tomorrow.

Close behind him in the scoring was the Philippine’s Marven Abat, who scored a 7.33 in his first round heat and made it through the second round as well, to advance into the Semifinals where he will meet Indonesian Arip “Mencos” Nurhidayat in Semifinal 2.

In the Women’s Longboard Division, it was another Japanese standout, Natsumi Taoka, who dominated the competition today, posting the highest single wave score of a 7.17 and the highest combined heat score of 14.00 in her first round heat, and easily made it through the second round to land her spot in the Semifinals, where she will meet the Philippine’s Daisy Valdez tomorrow.

The other Women’s Longboard Semifinal matchup is Maricel Parages, who hails from Siargao Island in the Philippines (home of Cloud 9), up against local girl Dhea Natasya.

The President of the Indonesia Surfing Federation (PSOI), Arya Subyakto, was judging the competition and when asked about his evaluation of the conditions today and any predictions on tomorrow’s final replied, “Today was great because there were both righthanders and lefthanders, so surfers had to be equally adept at going both ways, unlike some situations that might favor regular stand or goofy stance. What will be interesting for me tomorrow is how the more traditional style of the Indonesian and Filipino surfers will compare against the more high-performance style of the Japanese surfers. It will be an interesting dynamic for both the judges and the surfers tomorrow and a very exciting day!”

Tomorrow will see the conclusion of the RAST 1 Bali stop, with all divisions crowning champions. The competitors have been asked to standby at Padma Beach at 7:30, for a possible 8:00 am start.

After the finals, there will be an awarding party at Sinaloa complete with DJ’s starting at 7:00 pm. So don’t miss it! It’s on Jalan Padma Utara, close to Padma Beach.
