16 July 2026, Kovalam, Tamil Nadu: In near perfect morning glassy conditions, Day 1 of Tipi Jabrik’s Grom Patrol presented by Arun Vasu got off to a great start at the right point break of Covelong, with the Under 12 Boys getting into action at 10 am after final registration and a briefing was held at Surf Turn to ensure everyone understood the schedule and competition rules, including priority.
The action was fast and furious as the Under 12 Boys blasted through their 20 minute Quarterfinal Heats, and but the day’s highlight came in the highly competitive Under 16 Boys Division, where Mangalore Grom Patrol winner Harish P scored an almost perfect score of 9.17 (out of a possible 10 points) on his very first wave, carving and smashing the lip from the tip of the point to the very end section almost ending up on the sand. He added another 7.5 score midway through the heat to leave both his opponents needing a combination of scores, and ended with the highest total heat score of the day; 16.67 points out of a possible 20.
In the Under 18 Boys Division, it was Harish P again scoring excellence with an 8.0 (out of a possible 10), the highest single wave score of Quarterfinal matchups, as well the highest combined heat total of 13 points. He’s clearly got his sights set on that trip to Bali for the Grand Final!
The competition was called off for the day at 2:00 pm after the Under 18 Boys Quarterfinals, as the conditions were deteriorating.
“The contest started out really well today, a little late but with clean waves and tide going out,” said Contest Director Nawaz Jabbar. “But then the wind started coming up, and with the low tide it got a bit tricky with the current and getting choppy, so we decided to call it off for the day. Tomorrow we’ll get started earlier, we’ve put out a 6:30 am call for a 7:30 am start. The forecast shows a bit less swell, but it we’re thinking it should be about the same as today so let’s see what happens.”
