GENERAL LUNA, Siargao, Philippines (Wednesday, October 25, 2023) – The stage is set for the 2023 Siargao International Surfing Cup, which will commence tomorrow at the perfect peak of Cloud 9 in the Philippines. The World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) 3000 event has attracted over 100 of Asia’s best up-and-comers who have descended on the beautiful island of Siargao as they look to book a spot on the 2024 Challenger Series.
“We’re stoked to be back in the Philippines for the Siargao International Surfing Cup,” said WSL APAC Tour Manager Ty Sorati. “Cloud 9 is a truly perfect wave and delivers some of the best tube rides seen on the QS all year round. We’d like to thank our partners here in the Philippines for all of the work they’ve done here to get this event back in 2023 and upgraded to a QS 3000 for men and women. There is a huge contingent of Asia’s best QS competitors here, so it is bound to be a really exciting week of competition.”
Current WSL Asia Regional Rankings front runners Anon Matsuoka (JPN), Sara Wakita (JPN), Rinta Oooto (JPN), and Riaru Ito (JPN) will all be ones to watch this week at Cloud 9. Still, first, they’ll have to get past a pack of local specialists, headlined by reigning event winners John Mark Tokong (PHL) and Nilbie Blancada (PHL). Cheering the locals on will be Cong. Francisco Jose “Bingo” Matugas II, Representative 1st District Surigao Del Norte (Siargao Island), who is over the moon to see the region’s best return to his beloved Siargao for the 1-week event.
“It’s that time of the year again,” Bingo said. “All the Siargaonons and I always look forward to the Siargao International Surfing Cup season. I am extremely grateful to WSL for our long-standing partnership over the years that has resulted in countless opportunities created for our local surfers. It’s been a long ride, and we hope it will go even longer. We are now on our 27th International Surf Cup, and we hope to have many more to come. We’re definitely looking forward to having the opportunity to keep growing the event and one day see it as the biggest event in Siargao.”
With light winds and small to medium surf forecasted for the opening day, competition is likely to get underway over the mid to high tide in the afternoon tomorrow at Cloud 9.
The 2023 Siargao International Surfing Cup QS 3000 will run at Cloud 9 in the Philippines from October 26 to November 1. For more information or to watch the event LIVE, head to www.worldsurfleague.com or download the Free WSL App.
