17 June 2024, Afulu, North Nias: Competitors arrived in Afulu, North Nias in anticipation of the start of the 2nd annual North Nias International Surfing Competition tomorrow at Turedawola’s left hand reef break, which will run from 18-20 June.

The beautiful left hander breaks over unspoiled reef in crystal clear water, and is perfectly positioned to receive the Indian Ocean’s pumping dry season swells, with the community of Afulu ready to welcome returning and new surfers from around the world to this fun three-day event on the outer north fringes of Nias Island in Sumatra.

Last year’s event took place from 21-24 August, with Bali’s Made “Pajar” Ariyana (IDN) winning the Men’s Open Division and Willow Hardy (AUS) from West Australia taking the win in the Women’s Open Division. The final day saw 3-4 foot glassy walls running down the reef, offering a vision of perfection as the competitors were mixing it up with big turns, cutbacks and hacks along with the occasional barrel and air thrown in.

Both champions are back again to defend their titles, and Willow Hardy (AUS) can’t wait to get back into the water, saying “I’m super excited to come back to Afulu as the defending champion.  The wave is so epic and the place is so beautiful, I hope we score a great swell and I know we’ll have a great time.”  Her father Gene and younger sister Olive are also joining in the competition this year.

On the Men’s side, Made Ariyana  will have some heavy competition this year with fellow Balinese goofyfooter Mega Artana in the draw, along with Made Joi Satriawan, Oney Anwar, Made Diki Mahendra from Bali, a crew from South Nias including Kevin Wau, Irwan Wau, Yoza Zagoto, and more.

After his first surf this morning, Bali’s Mega Artana said, “This wave is really fun, I had a good time this morning.  I hear it will get even bigger tomorrow, so I’m looking forward to the competition starting.  Hopefully I can win it over Pajar and become the champion this year.”
