On Monday March 4, 6 employees of the Asian Surf Co participated in Rip Curl School of Surf’s Mangrove Mob conservation program, which is a CSR initiative that aligns with both the ASC’s and Rip Curl School of Surf’s commitment to environmental conservation, sustainable practices, and community engagement within the surfing industry.

Led by Rip Curl School of Surf’s Jonathan “Jonni” Morrison – Deaker, the morning program began at the Sanur beachside location with a 20 minute introduction to the mangrove ecosystem, where it provided detailed insights into its importance and how it contributes to maintaining a healthy environment. Of particular interest was learning the significance of mangroves as natural barriers that trap sediment and pollutants, preventing them from flowing into the sea. And how mangroves protect seagrass beds and coral reefs, which all form an interconnected system that sustains marine life.

Following this educational session, the participants were given a Stand Up Paddle (SUP) lesson, as this is the most effective way to experience and enjoy the beauty of the mangrove ecosystem, as well as planting baby mangrove pods and picking up trash that is stuck around the mangrove roots.

Next, the boat was loaded up with the SUP’s and the participants, baskets and rice sacks for trash, and then off for a 15 minute ride to mangroves. Upon arrival, everyone boarded their SUP’s and paddled into the mangroves, where the next 2 hours were spend learning more about the mangroves from a closer perspective, how to find and then plant the mangrove pods, and of course picking up as much trash as possible and bringing it back to the boat.

Once back at the Rip Curl School of Surf, Jonni led the group in identifying and sorting the different types of plastics that had been collected, explaining how certain types could be recycled or repurposed and other types that realistically cannot.

At the end of the morning program, Adi from the Asian Surf Co was very amazed at the experience, saying “I’m a native Balinese, and have seen mangroves all my life, but I have never realised their significance and place in the world’s ecosystem until today. I hope more locals and tourists too can participate in this program, so we can together help make a cleaner world.”

The ASC’s Tipi Jabrik was grateful to the Rip Curl School of Surf for the opportunity to share this experience with his ASC team, saying “The ASC is honoured to have been invited to participate in this CSR program, and to learn more about how to take care of our environment. A lot of our lives as surfers are spent in the ocean, and it is our duty and responsibility to care for it and to teach others to do the same. Thanks Jonni and your team, keep up the great work. We applaud your commitment to environmental stewardship and community empowerment within the surfing community.”

“Rip Curl School of Surf firmly believes in the significance of preserving natural environments and positively impacting local communities, as we’re not here just to teach surfing and other related activities, but we aim to educate individuals on environmental conservation and foster a sense of responsibility towards our planet with CSR programs such as the Mangrove Mob as well,” explained Jonni.

Another Rip Curl School of Surf program is the “Coral Nursery Tour”, which they offer in collaboration with the NGO “Ocean Gardener” and the Rotary Club Bali Action. This supports the development of a Coral Gardener nursery in Sanur, where participants have the opportunity to sponsor coral planting or a coral nursery rack, thus contributing to coral restoration efforts.
