4 February 2020- San Juan, La Union, Philippines: A festive Kick Off Party on the evening of February 1st at MAKAN|eliseos complete with a BBQ, ice cold Coronas, tasty Stoli vodka drinks and a spectacular La Union sunset got the 8th annual Single and Unattached event started in a fine and festive fashion, followed the next day by an afternoon at Clean Beach for Registration, Board Check, and a Competition briefing to ready all the competitors and logging fans for the Philippines’ most looked-forward-to classic single fin logging event and beach party.
The invited surfers managed to get a few warmup waves in the few days before the start of the waiting period, but tiny waves on the first day of the waiting period and a completely flat South China Sea today has the event on standby until the forecasted swell arrives on Thursday the 6th, which gives the organizers at least 3 full days to complete the competition. The event is planned to wrap up on Saturday evening February 8th with an Awarding and Beach Party at Clean Beach complete with live music, DJ’s, and plenty of refreshing adult beverages from Corona and Stoli, but can be extended to Feb 9th depending on the wave conditions.
The Men’s Longboard Division has a full heat draw of 48 signed up, a mix of Australian, Japanese, and Filipino loggers including 2020 Sea Games Longboard Champ Roger Casugay and runner up Jay-R Esquivel for the local side as well as Japan’s Pippen Suzuki and Shohei Akimoto, and rounded out by Sean Nettleton, Evan Ledger, Jaya Guy, and Mark Matisons from the Land Down Undah (AUS).
The Women’s Longboard Division numbers 24 female loggers and boasts several of the surfing world’s most popular lady loggers in Josie Prendergast (AUS), Alicia Kelley and Nique Miller from Hawaii, who are joining La Union’s Daisy Valdez and Siargao Island’s Aping and Ikit Agudo and other talented Filipina’s, Korea’s Sunshine Su Hyun Shin and Hye Hyun Song, and Japan’s Chiaka Ikeda.
In addition there is a 17 strong contingent of local talent joining the Under 18 and Single Division, and the registration is still open for the Single Fin Shortboard Division as of today.
You can check the Live Heats website at https://liveheats.com/events/2975 to see all the competitors who have signed up as well as all of the heat draws, plus when the event is rolling you can see all the scores live as they are being input by the judging panel.
As of today the event is on standby, as the ocean is essentially flat as a lake, with a projected start on Thursday morning depending upon the actual arrival of the predicted swell, which is forecast to start showing late tomorrow afternoon.
