2 May 2018: Kuta Beach, Bali, Indonesia: Glassy 1-2 foot waves got the Women’s Shortboard Division started off promptly at 7 am, and with the exception of a few lulls during the high tide, conditions were very good for the majority of the day’s competition, which saw both Rounds 1 and 2 of the Women’s Shortboard and the Men’s Shortboard Divisions being completed by 4:00 pm.
The top seed in the Women’s Shortboard Division is Chelsea Tuach from Barbados, who was on the elite WSL Women’s World Tour in 2016, and currently competes full time on the World Qualifying Series. She had just competed in the QS 1000 Krui Pro in South Sumatra and decided to join the RAST event as she was staying in Kuta.
“I’m so happy I joined this event,” said Chelsea. “I’m staying at Garut’s (Widiarta) place just across the street, so I surf Halfway every morning and afternoon. I think it’s great training for me on the QS, so joining this event seemed like fun. Seeing how good these Asian women surf, like the Koreans, Chinese, Japanese, and Indonesians is great, and having a girls comp with just 24 girls on this side of the world is really different. I’ve been having fun, it’s great!”
The top seed in the Men’s Shortboard Division, fresh off his win at the WQS1500 Krui Pro in Sumatra, is Indonesia’s own Oney Anwar, who hails from Lakey Peak in Sumbawa and is a full time WQS warrior, splitting his time between the Gold Coast of Australia and Indonesian. “It feels really special to come back here to Kuta Beach where I competed as a grom, then in ISC (Indonesian Surfing Championship) comps. Lots of good memories for sure. Today I got so surf against one of the Halfway locals, Gogo Sujaya, and we both made it through the heat, and tomorrow I get to surf with and against guys that I always looked up to and watched surf while growing up, like Pepen Hendrik and Mustofa Jeksen. It will be lots of fun and I’m really looking forward to it!” said Oney.
Of special mention are the youngest competitors in this event, 9-year-old Natan Bontje from Kuta in the Men’s Division and 13-year-old Gracia Listiana Rahayu from Keramas in the Women’s Division. The future of Indonesia surfing is obviously very bright indeed, watching these ripping young grommets perform!
Tomorrow will see the Round 3 of the Men’s Shortboard Division getting underway at 7:00am, then the Quarterfinals of the Women’s Shortboard and Women’s Longboard, and then the Men’s Longboard Quarterfinals to end the day.
