Day 3 of RAST #1 in Kuta, Bali See's Spectacular Shortboard and Longboard Action to Set Up an Exciting Conclusion Tomorrow
4 May 2018:  Kuta Beach, Bali, Indonesia:  Day 3 of the RAST event on the world famous Kuta Beach in Bali saw all four divisions completing their man-on-man (and woman-on-woman) quarterfinals today in glassy and fun two foot waves, starting off in the morning with some super high performance shortboarding heats and ending with unquestionably the most exciting display of stylish longboard surfing that most of the crowd on Kuta Beach has ever seen by Indonesia and the Philippines best longboarders.

The day started off with Round 4 of the Men’s Shortboard Division, and the perfect glassy low tide waves gave the competitors plenty of opportunity to wow the judges with their variety of maneuvers, which they certainly did.  Making it into tomorrow’s semifinals are Oney Anwar from Lakey Peak (Sumbawa) who will take on Made Darmayasa from Legian (Bali) in Semifinal 1, and Rio Waida (Jimbaran, Bali) who will be up against Kuta Beach local Raditya Rondi in Semifinal 2.

In the Women’s Shortboard Division it will be World Qualifying Series competitor Chelsea Tuach (Barbados) taking on last year’s RAST Shortboard Champion Kairi Sekiguchi from Japan in Seminfinal 1, and Brittany Penaroza (HAW) versus Kuta Beach local Dhea Natasya in Semifinal 2.

The Women’s Longboarders put on a great show in the high tide Kuta Beach waves, which showed a bit more size and allowed some nice long noserides.  Not surprisingly, the Philippines have all of their team going into the Semifinals tomorrow, with one lone Japanese surfer, last year’s Women’s Longboard runner up Kairi Sekiguchi.  Semifinal 1 will see last year’s RAST Women's Longboard Champion Daisy Valdez (La Union, Philippines) taking on Ikit Agudo (Siargao Island, Philippines), and Ikit’s twin sister Aping Agudo up against Kairi Sekiguchi.

Not to take anything away from the first two Men’s Longboard heats, but the last two heats had the spectators on their feet and cheering with almost each wave, as it was the best of the Philippines and the best of Indonesia’s famed “Batu Keras Boys” putting on an marvelous display of innovative and old school longboarding.

In Quarterfinal 3 it was Marven Abat and Jay-R Esquivel, who both hail from La Union in the Philippines, dueling it out wave for wave but with Jay-R looking to have the upper hand.  But with just minutes to go, Marven locked into a perfect righthander and with a combination of nose rides and turns made it all the way almost onto the sand, scoring an excellent 8.33 (out of a possible 10) to take the lead and the heat win.

Marven will face a formidable opponent tomorrow in Mencos from Batu Keras in Semifinal 2 tomorrow, who in another epic duel with fellow Batu Keras longboarder Dean Permana in Quarterfinal 4 came out on top with the highest single wave score of the event, a near perfect 9.00 out of a possible 10 points. And adding his second highest wave score of an 8.33, he also claims the highest combined heat score of the competition, 17.33 points out of a possible 20 points.  Permana was a close second, also having two wave scores on the excellent range of 8.23 and 8.30, for a total of 16.53.

In Semifinal 2 it will be Batu Keras’s Deni Firdaus against last year’s RAST Men’s Longboard Champion Benito Nerida from La Union.  It should be a great showdown for the final, seeing the best of Indonesia against the best of the Philippines.

Come on out to Kuta Beach tomorrow to see the conclusion of the RAST Kuta event, which will is planned to start around 8 am start to take advantage of the rising tide, and the event should be finishing up around 1 pm.   But there will be some tents with local and international brands and the Bye Bye Plastic Bag environmental crew will be there as well.

The awards presentation will start at 5:30 pm, followed by a fire dance at 6:30, and the internationally renown Balinese rockabilly band The Hydrant will rock the beach from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm.  DJ DIZZ will be spinning from 9 until about 11 pm to finish up the party.
