22 September 2017, Kuta, Bali: The ASC (Asian Surfing Championships) is happy to announce their support of the Aceh International Surfing Championship 2017 that will take place on Simeulue Island in the Aceh Province of Indonesia from the 26th-28th of October 2017.
The Aceh International Surfing Championship 2017 is an Aceh government sponsored event that will offer a total of IDR 75,000,000 for the Men’s International Division (approximately $5,700 USD), with IDR 20,000,000 ($1,500) going to the winner.
Simeulue Island is just off the west coast of Sumatra, a one hour plane flight from the city of Medan. It is an island of untouched beauty and has a population of around 85,000 people; hosting a multitude of surf spots, warm water, and amazing scenery.
The ASC has supported two previous events at Aceh, the first in 2013 and the second in 2015, both at Nancala Beach and both won by West Java’s Dede Suryana.
This year however, the event site will by at a right hand reef break known as Dylans, directly in front of Ranu’s Surf Camp. Dylans is one of the of the most consistent waves on the island, offering up barrels, walls, and air sections depending on swell direction, swell size, and the tides, making it an ideal location for the competitors to show off their complete repertoire of maneuvers.
“I am extremely happy to have the opportunity to help host a surfing competition here, as one of our goals is that the community can be aided in overcoming the trauma we sustained from the tsunami in 2004,” says Ranu Amilu of Ranu’s Surf Camp. “There is still a feeling of wariness towards the ocean here, and for the local community to see that the waves are our friends and an opportunity for relaxation and sport will benefit the island greatly,” he explained.
The ASC’s Tipi Jabrik is delighted to be again helping out the Aceh government and the island of Simeulue by bringing his professional team to run the event and to attract international as well as Indonesian surfers to join in the competition. “Simeulue Island is a perfect place for a competition as it has great waves and a lot of beautiful scenery, and has great potential as a surfing tourism destination, “ stated Jabrik.
“Through running events like this on the island, we are increasing the worldwide awareness of Simeulue as a surfing tourism destination, as well as educating the local community on how to interact with international visitors, and encouraging them to provide the types of services and goods that are needed by the visiting surfers,” he explained.
The Aceh International Surfing Championship 2017 will have both local and international men’s divisions, where the top finishing local surfers will receive a spot in the international division and a chance to win prize money.
